The Beauty of War

Walking around campus you may have witnessed the numerous buttons, T-shirts and signs protesting the war in Iraq. One particular sign which formally resided in the Atrium framed the faces of our leaders under the heading "An Axis of Liars". This sign, as well as others like it, was created by UNCG's Anti-War coalition, the primary voice of student liberals. Occasionally the coalition sets up a booth in the Atrium to protest their cause and hand out information to those who pass by. Personally, it is damaging to my beliefs to be assumed to be Anti-War simply because I attend a liberal arts school, So I take the pamphlet, I toss it away, and I wonder what it is about me that makes me look like I support their opinions. Then finally I realize I need to say that I'm Pro-War, and here's why.

Last year I wrote a paper on war for one of my classes and emailed it to my Uncle Ed who spent twenty-five years in the Army and served in Vietnam long enough to earn three purple hearts. Growing up I never knew him very well, however when I received a response on my paper from him my views about war and him changed greatly. In brief, he stated: "For the life of me I never understood why men and women in the military were called baby-killers. For as long as I have been in the Army I have never met anyone, man or woman, who enjoyed killing anybody."

He included in this email a picture of himself cradling a newborn Vietnamese child which he saved from a burning city. The picture was labeled "Vietnam, 1967, me and Rvayn". Today that child lives in California, is a successful business man and has a wife and three children of his own. My uncle still keeps in touch with him to this day.

To say it simply we are at war with Iraq to deliver people just like Rvayn from the hand of terriost rule. Did you know that in Iraq they have stadiums specially suited for the soul purpose of murder, rape and devastation to the innocent people of Iraq? How can we as an American nation lean back in our reclining chairs, sip on our Coca-Cola and watch this destruction on TV and not get involved? War is not futile. War is a reason for doing everything we can to make people breathe another day who otherwise would have never done so. It is the Liberals who ignore the fact that we are not killing the innocent intentionally, but we are saving them intentionally.

Trinty, What a courageous article! I applaud your stand! It's so easy to go along with the crowd but it takes real courage to stand up for what you believe in. (Continued…)
