This past Saturday the Greensboro Day School, hosted its fourth annual UNCG center for Women's Health and Wellness JV field hockey tournament including 8 teams and roughly 200 participants from North Carolina and Virginia. The event was sponsored by the UNCG department of Kinesiology and the American Heart Association, along with a group from Sig Ep who helped referee and run the lines.

The all-day event kicked off at eight in the mornng. with a breakfast followed by speaker, Marci Williams, from the AHA told the players about her amazing story of losing well over 100 lbs. "the right way, simply using diet and exercise". "One in three women die from a heart related disease", said Marci, "and by talking to young girls about the Our Heart, Our Choice campaign, we hope to show them how small things lead to big changes."

To help grasp the magnitude of heart related problems woman face, consider the statistics: According to www.Americanheart.org, there are 40, 000 young women with heart disease hospitalized each year. The death rate has reached 16,000, which places it among the leading causes of death for this age group of 55 years and younger.

Staggering as it is, this number is comparable to the number of woman who die from breast cancer in the same age group. To help decipher between non life threatening indigestion and heart burn and a potentially lethal heart condition, some symptoms for woman to take note of are pain in the jaw or shoulder, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath and weakness or fatigue, symptoms that are "unique to woman, and ones they should be aware of", said Sarah Fedele also of the AHA.

Donna Duffy, faculty of the Greensboro Day School and PHD graduate of the UNCG department of Kinesiology played a major role in Saturday's championship. She believes, "this is a unique opportunity for the JV girls to get to play in a tournament like this, because it gives them a chance to see what it is like to play at a more competitive level. They usually do not play over time, and today they will."
